Breaking news: Manager steps down from role ahead of Crystal Palace vs Burnley

Roy Hodgson has left Crystal Palace, ahead of Burnley’s visit to Selhurst Park on Saturday.
The 76-year-old has stood down from his position after overseeing only one win in his last 15 games, sparking protest from the stands.

Hodgson appeared to be leaving last week, but was sent to the hospital after becoming ill during a training session. The former England manager is currently out of hospital and claimed to be recovering well.

Palace, who face Everton tonight, appear to be on the verge of replacing Hodgson with Austrian manager Oliver Glasner.

Assistants Paddy McCarthy and Ray Lewington will lead the team in tonight’s match at Goodison Park.

Chairman Steve Parish stated, “Roy holds a special place in Crystal Palace history that will never be forgotten.”

“After four years of leading the club to Premier League status season after season, he rejoined us and worked wonders. That he then decided to continue in the summer demonstrates his dedication to our team. Simply said, Roy is responsible for our continuing Premier League position.
“I would like to thank Roy enormously for his service and wish him the very best for the future; it’s fair to say Roy has the keys to Selhurst Park and will always be welcomed back.”

Hodgson, who overseen more than 200 games as Palace manager, decided it was time to leave the South London club.

“This club is very special and means so much to me and has played a big part in my footballing life,” he added.

“I have thoroughly loved my six seasons here since it has provided me with the opportunity to work with world-class players and staff while doing what I enjoy every day.

“However, I understand, given recent circumstances, it may be prudent at this time for the club to plan ahead, and therefore I have taken the decision to step aside so that the club can bring forward their plans for a new manager, as intended for this summer.”

Hodgson went on to say, “I am confident that the season will finish well and I wish the team every success in the weeks, months and seasons to come.”
