The Premier League match officials have been confirmed for Newcastle United’s home game against AFC Bournemouth on Saturday (3pm kick-off).

Michael Salisbury will referee the game at St James’ Park. Salisbury’s last game as a referee for Newcastle was a 2-1 FA Cup loss to Sheffield Wednesday in January.

However, a VAR intervention by Lee Mason caused Salisbury to call out the goal owing to a foul by Joe Willock on Palace goalkeeper Vicente Guaita. Replays revealed that Mitchell shoved Willock into Guaita, and PGMOL later issued a statement claiming an error.

The match ended 0-0, and Mason was dropped for the next game weeks, while Salisbury was assigned to VAR duty, a job he has played frequently this season. He was the VAR for Newcastle’s 4-4 home draw with Luton Town, awarded a penalty in the second half.

Salisbury was also removed from refereeing duties last season after a disputed VAR error in which he failed to give Brighton & Hove Albion a penalty in a 2-1 loss to Tottenham Hotspur.
Salisbury will be aided by Richard West and Akil Howson, with Oli Langford serving as the fourth official. Rob Jones will be the match’s VAR, with Simon Bennett as his assistant.

VAR Jones has also been the focus of controversy this season, with Nottingham Forest registering a formal protest against the official for decisions made in their games. Jones dismissed Forest defender Willy Boly in a 3-2 loss to Bournemouth in December for a second bookable offence.

Jones was also on VAR duty when Forest’s Joe Worrall was sent off and Manchester United was awarded a late penalty in a 3-2 defeat in August. Newcastle will try to extend their Premier League unbeaten streak to four games when they face Bournemouth on Saturday. However, Magpies manager Eddie Howe has yet to defeat his previous club in the Premier League in three attempts.
