It’s 2024, and a significant deal appears to be in the works between Newcastle United and Manchester United.
Dan Ashworth, the Toon’s sporting director, is likely to leave St James’ Park, with Manchester United interested in bringing him to Old Trafford.
He is interested in the transfer, with British millionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe ready to fulfill his way and take one of Newcastle United’s most influential figures behind the scenes.
The only thing preventing Ashworth from leaving Newcastle for Manchester United appears to be compensation.
Man United will have to pay compensation to get Dan Ashworth
Since rumors of Ashworth’s departure initially surfaced, it has been suggested that Man United will face significant compensation costs.
It has now been alleged that it might cost them more than £6 million, with the Telegraph estimating it could be up to £10 million.
It may all depend on when Manchester United wants Ashworth to start. They will hope for him to arrive as soon as possible, but this may not be possible. Ashworth’s Newcastle contract has a 12-month gardening leave option, which will only be waived if Manchester United pay the Magpies what they want.
And the Newcastle owners should attempt to squeeze every penny out of Manchester United given what they did in January 2022..
Chance for Newcastle to get revenge on Man United
January 2022 marked the first transfer window since PIF acquired Newcastle United. There were several changes at St James’ Park, with five new players entering Eddie Howe’s squad.
However, Jesse Lingard did not participate. That’s despite the fact that the Newcastle owners were desperate to sign him on loan, and he was eager to move.
It occurred at a time when he was barely playing for Manchester United, and a transfer elsewhere seemed like the best option.
However, he was priced out of relocating to Tyneside. Manchester United were eager to do business with Newcastle, but only provided they paid a large sum. They knew the Magpies were trying to avoid relegation, and there was also concern about what Newcastle could become after their Saudi-backed takeover.
That is why Manchester United asked that Howe’s team pay Lingard’s salaries in full, plus a £2.5 million fee. In addition, they demanded a £12 million incentive if the Magpies survived.
Newcastle did survive, but not with Lingard on the team. He was compelled to stay in Manchester until his contract expired, missing out on the opportunity to revive his career on Tyneside.
Obviously, it was a difficult situation for Manchester United because his contract was about to expire, but the money they asked was ludicrous.
Now the tables have turned, and it will all depend on how desperate they are for Ashworth. If you truly want him as quickly as possible, then put your money where your mouth is.
