Alan Shearer shares if he wants Jose Mourinho to replace Eddie Howe at Newcastle

Alan Shearer has now voiced his opinion on whether Jose Mourinho is a suitable fit to become Newcastle United manager.

With Eddie Howe under fire in recent months, there was speculation that Newcastle would want to replace him with a well-known manager, and Mourinho was frequently mentioned as a top candidate.

Shearer praised Mourinho’s successful career on The Rest Is Football Podcast, but he wanted to underline his support for Howe at Newcastle.

Shearer says no to Mourinho at Newcastle

There is great disagreement about whether Howe is the right guy to lead Newcastle to triumph, given that neither has much experience winning trophies in the last 50 years.

Mourinho is a proven winner, but there is a sense that his time has come and gone, with his previous three jobs at Manchester United, Tottenham, and Roma all concluding with his lowest win percentage of his career.

The 61-year-old has still managed to win trophies practically wherever he’s played, including three in one season at Manchester United and the Europa Conference League with Roma in 2022.

While Shearer admires Mourinho and believes he has had a ‘great’ career, he is equally pleased with Howe’s current performance and believes he should be the one to lead them forward.

“He’s had a tremendous career, Jose. I am not sure where he will go next. But, no, I am very pleased with Eddie Howe at Newcastle, and the work he has done and is doing.”

Howe is yet to have a chance to become successful

People will argue that Newcastle needs a proven winner to take them to the top and that Howe isn’t it, but surely he should be given a chance first.

Every manager will not have been a winning manager with an impressive trophy record unless they were given the opportunity to head a team and demonstrate their true abilities.

Realistically, Howe has only been with Newcastle for just over two years, the majority of which was spent rebuilding what was primarily a Championship club, and he has led them to the Champions League.

With the squad still in the FA Cup season, the 46-year-old’s managerial tenure cannot begin on a high one.
