Sunderland receive double injury boosts – but one fresh blow delays comeback

CORRY Evans is set to take a big step towards a first-team return by playing for the Under-21s after rejoining the squad in training.

It’s a significant boost for the Black Cats and the midfielder, who has been out of action since suffering a catastrophic knee injury in January of last year.

It’s too early for Evans to be considered for first-team action at this time, but he’s back in full training and will play some important match minutes for the Under-21s in the coming weeks.

In addition, Callum Styles is poised to resume full training for the first time since joining the club in January.

Styles may be available for the game at Birmingham this weekend, but the game against Huddersfield tomorrow is too soon.

Beale provided an update on the injury issue, saying: “Some good news, Corry Evans is back on the turf now, but he will spend a few of days with the under-21s group to ease him back in.

“Callum Styles will join the group today for his first session. The game tomorrow is too early for him, but he could be in contention for the weekend.”

Sunderland suffered a minor injury setback, with Elliot Embleton’s return to the Under-21s delayed after injuring his ankle in training.

Embleton was set to return to the Under-21s on Friday night, but the game against Leicester was postponed, so his comeback is now on hold.

“He rolled his ankle a little yesterday and will miss a couple of days,” said Beale of Embleton.

“The intention was for him to play with the second team this weekend, but that could be pushed back. It’s just one of those things; the game can be brutal at times. You’re just getting ready for your first game back, and then it’s canceled, and the following session you roll your ankle.”
