JJ Watt reveals stance of Burnley’s board to relegation and Kompany’s future

JJ Watt says it would be “irresponsible” for Burnley’s board not to prepare for relegation, but insists the Clarets would battle to the death to stay in the top flight.

Following Saturday’s 3-1 defeat to Liverpool, Vincent Kompany’s side now has only 14 games to avoid relegation to the Championship.

The Clarets are currently seven points clear of safety, with title contenders Arsenal coming up next.

Watt, the club’s minority shareholder, was asked about Burnley’s present situation during an appearance on the US-based CBS Golazo Sport show over the weekend.

He stated, “Being on the board and attending meetings, you don’t want to have to plan for [relegation], but it’s irresponsible not to.

“Of course, we’re prepared for that eventuality; we’ve talked about it all, but we’re fighting and doing everything we can to stay up.

“We received a few good loans during the past transfer window in [Maxime] Esteve, [Lorenz] Assignon, and [David] Fofana, so we’re going to fight hard and give it our all.

“If the situation does arise, we’ll be prepared for it and we will prepare to bounce back up very quickly.”

Whatever happens between now and the end of the season, Watt believes the team is in excellent hands with Kompany at the helm.

“He’s great,” the NFL icon said.

“Some of my favorite experiences have been sitting in the dressing room with Vince, just talking football, going over tactics, talking about attitude, and motivation. He’s been fantastic at it.

“He’s been a fun part of my job.”
