Newcastle United are now expressing serious interest in signing one of the most in-form strikers in world football, with Alan Shearer encouraging them to make a move.
Newcastle are looking to improve their attack this summer as Callum Wilson recovers from injury, and Ivan Toney is one player they are interested in.
According to a fresh report from TEAMtalk, both Arsenal and Newcastle are on high alert after it was revealed that contract negotiations between Toney and Brentford are now stalled.
Toney looks destined to leave amid Newcastle interest
Toney has had a terrible season, having been sidelined for eight months due to a gambling ban, but he returned to the Bees’ lineup with a goal against Nottingham Forest.
Since returning to the team, the 27-year-old has scored three goals in four Premier League outings, and it appears that he was never absent from the team.
While Brentford would love to keep their great player, they understand that it will be nearly impossible, as manager Thomas Frank recently revealed that a summer move for the ‘world class’ striker is quite likely.
The Bees are still hoping that the striker would sign a new deal, but talks aren’t said to be going smoothly, which has alerted both Newcastle and Arsenal to the issue.
Shearer urges Newcastle to sign talented striker
Shearer is naturally a tremendous fan of the talented goalscorer who is in high demand, and he hopes Newcastle will be the team to sign him this summer.
On The Rest Is Football Podcast, Shearer said that Newcastle’s striker choices are rather limited, but believes Toney would be a’really fantastic’ fit for the Magpies next season.
On the podcast, he stated, “I think he’s a really good player and a really good option.”
“Newcastle need to improve in that department, they need another option in there, so I don’t think there will be any shortage of suitors for Toney.”
It will be a difficult battle for the Englishman, who will essentially have his pick of teams in the current period, as many are struggling to find a top-tier striker.
Newcastle are fortunate to have someone as talented as Alexander Isak on their team, but adding Toney to the mix would be a significant boost to their chances for next season.
