Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher believes the decision to let Liverpool’s second goal against Burnley was correct.
Luis Diaz restored Liverpool’s advantage at the start of the second half with a close-range goal off Harvey Elliott’s cross.
However, Burnley’s players were dissatisfied with referee Tim Robinson’s decision to allow play to resume after Alex Mac Allister seemed to foul Aaron Ramsey on the edge of the box.
Ramsey remained on his feet, prompting speculation that Burnley would have been awarded a foul if he had gone down.
Vincent Kompany also remonstrated with the decision on the sidelines, earning him a booking from the referee, which means he will be banned from the touchline for next week’s game against Arsenal after receiving his third yellow card of the season.
Gallagher claimed that VAR’s decision not to overturn the goal on Sky Sports’ Ref Watch this morning was the wrong decision.
“I wasn’t convinced it was a foul,” he was quoted as saying.
“I believe that if a foul is called in this scenario (Luis Diaz’s goal), it must be called by the on-field referee rather than VAR. Otherwise, you are re-refereeing a football game.”
Liverpool won the game 3-1, with Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez both scoring.
Dara O’Shea scored a bullet header in first-half stoppage time to bring the Clarets level.
With the game tied at 2-1 midway through the second half, David Fofana lost two golden opportunities to level, while Wilson Odobert also missed a crucial chance.
