Haywood Highsmith’s agent stated Thursday night that the Miami Heat forward is “shaken” following a late-night collision in which he collided with a guy attempting to rescue the driver of another stalled vehicle.
According to investigators, the injured individual required a partial amputation of his leg as well as other fractures and probable fractures. Around 11:20 p.m. Tuesday, the injured man was attempting to push the disabled car, which did not have lights on, out of the way of traffic when Highsmith collided with him, according to police.
Highsmith was ticketed for careless driving, police said.
“Haywood struck a pedestrian pushing a disabled car without lights down the middle of a dark road,” claimed Highsmith’s agent, Jerry Dianis, on Thursday night. “Haywood hurried to assist the individual pushing the automobile who was injured. A bystander placed a tourniquet to the injuries, and Haywood remained on the site, talking to the injured man and offering words of comfort until an ambulance transported him to the hospital.
According to police, Highsmith was driving at approximately 45 mph in a 40 mph zone. Police said Highsmith was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol and was unharmed.
Highsmith was returning home from Miami’s game against Orlando on Tuesday night when the tragedy occurred. Highsmith was not present for the Heat’s game against San Antonio on Wednesday night. The squad stated that he was absent for personal reasons.
“This was an unfortunate accident,” Dianis stated. “We have been informed that the individual suffered major injuries but is in stable condition. Haywood and his family are praying for him. Haywood is obviously disturbed by this and grateful for the support and prayers he has received from the Miami Heat and fans.”
It is uncertain when Highsmith will return to game action. The Heat will not play again until they face Boston on Sunday. “Our hearts go out to those who were injured,” the team said in a statement Wednesday.
Highsmith is averaging 5.8 points this season.
