Newcastle United set to confirm deal with £5m defender after January transfer decision

Newcastle United are apparently planning to exercise an option to extend Emil Krafth’s contract with the club until the summer of 2025.

Krafth’s current deal with Newcastle was signed in 2022 and expires this summer. He’s been out of action for the majority of the last two years due to a significant anterior cruciate ligament injury.

The 29-year-old’s last Premier League appearance was over two years ago, but he has since returned to full fitness, starting Carabao Cup games against Manchester United and Chelsea. He also played the most of the 3-0 victory over Fulham in December because to Fabian Schar’s early injury.

According to Swedish outlet Fotboll Direkt, Krafth’s contract extension will ‘become official shortly’.

The decision is a U-turn for the player, who was said to be open to a January move in order to gain more playing time. However, the signing of Javier Manquillo and Newcastle’s continued injury crisis effectively ruled out a departure for the Swedish international.

Krafth joined Newcastle for £5 million from Amiens in 2019 and has since made 72 appearances for the club, scoring one. The acquisitions of Kieran Trippier and, more recently, Tino Livramento have had an impact on Krafth’s game time and long-term injury.

Newcastle United - Emil Krafth: This team spirit is helping me with my recovery

When asked about his future with the club in late 2023, Krafth told FootballSkanalen: “I haven’t thought about it too much because my concentration has been on returning and playing football. Then you must take it as it comes.

“It is obvious that you speak a little, but not particularly. It is not something I focus on. I just want to come back and play football.

“Whatever occurs, you have to deal with it. We are really enjoying ourselves in Newcastle.

“I haven’t considered it yet. It depends on what the club wants and signals, but they haven’t signalled anything yet. We will see.

“My family and I really adore Newcastle, so we could see us staying. “We’d love to stay.”

Krafth is scheduled to travel with the Newcastle squad to face Nottingham Forest in the Premier League this Saturday (5:30pm kickoff).
