Latest: Burnley’s transfer interest in defender revealed

Reportedly, Burnley sought to secure the signing of Patrick van Aanholt during the January transfer window, but they couldn’t reach an agreement. Van Aanholt, who is currently on loan at PSV Eindhoven, is experiencing a successful spell there, with PSV leading the Eredivisie after an unbeaten streak of 20 matches.

Van Aanholt has played in 16 matches in the top-flight league, starting nine of them, and his only contribution came as an assist in a 3-0 victory over Go Ahead Eagles. He is best known in England for his stints at Sunderland and Crystal Palace, amassing over 200 appearances for both clubs.

According to reports from Eindhovens Dagblad, Burnley hoped to bring Van Aanholt to Turf Moor before the January window closed. However, PSV was unwilling to allow him to return to his parent club, Galatasaray, in order to facilitate a move to Vincent Kompany’s team.

It’s understood that Van Aanholt’s representatives are frustrated with his lack of playing time at PSV, despite initially being a key player at the start of the season. The loan signing of Sergino Dest from Barcelona has pushed him down the pecking order in the left-back position.

Despite his situation, PSV seems uninterested in sending Van Aanholt back to Galatasaray and is reportedly keen on securing him on a permanent deal in the summer.

Burnley has been searching for a left-back since their return to the Premier League, having missed out on Ian Maatsen from Chelsea during the summer transfer window. However, they managed to secure a right-back, Lorenz Assignon, on loan from Rennes for the remainder of the season.

Assignon started in Burnley’s recent draw against Fulham, with natural right-back Vitinho shifting to the left-back position. David Datro Fofana, on loan from Chelsea, made his second substitute appearance and scored two goals to salvage a point for Burnley against Fulham.

Despite the uplifting goals, Kompany’s team still faces a significant challenge, being seven points away from safety, with tough matches against Liverpool and Arsenal looming.
