Premier League boss handed huge fine after ‘strange’ Newcastle comments

Marco Silva was not impressed with the match officials after Newcastle United raced past Fulham in December.
The FA has fined Marco Silva heavily for comments he made during Newcastle United’s 3-0 victory against Fulham in December. The 46-year-old regarded on-field referee Samuel Barrott’s behavior as’really weird’ after Raul Jimenez was given his marching orders.

The Cottagers’ striker received a red card shortly before the half-hour mark for a reckless charge on Sean Longstaff. Jimenez was first cautioned, but following a video assistant referee review, he was ejected.

Just seconds before, Jamaal Lascelles delivered a hard tackle to the Mexico international.

The Newcastle skipper escaped punishment after his foul, laying the groundwork for Silva’s fury.

After the game at St James’ Park, the Fulham manager told reporters, “It was a disappointing afternoon.” It was arguably the quiet game Newcastle needed after their midweek Champions League clash. It was not our fault that the game ended quietly.

“Prior to the red card, [Jamal] Lascelles had a blatant elbow. He knew Raul was present. The elbow is out. Until the 21st minute, the referee did not give us any fouls. Newcastle always took a free kick.

“In these types of games, the referee must be able to deal with the pressure because they are always in front of their home crowd. The Premier League should select a referee with expertise and the ability to handle pressure.

“This is an excellent example of a referee who lacks the necessary experience to handle the pressure. He did not leave any room for doubt or foul play. Even the elbow in Raul’s face.”

When asked specifically about Jimenez’s red card, Silva responded: “He lost the impetus to go in, but it’s not significant. He jumped into the player, but you don’t observe anything bad or wrong with the opponent. A yellow is correct.

“VAR is trying to discover all of these opportunities to provide. To justify their position? I do not know. It’s evident that he [Jimenez] lost momentum. He should have done it differently. Going for a red card feels quite odd.

“It was an unusual afternoon for the referee. I attempted to chat with him afterwards, but he almost raced into the changing room. That is exactly what we are dealing with right now.”

As a result, the FA fined Silva £80,000 for inappropriate conduct after he admitted to the offense. The Portuguese manager avoided a touchline punishment, but he was issued a warning for future behaviour.
