Romain Mundle is Sunderland’s second signing in the January transfer window.
Romain Mundle says joining Sunderland was a ‘no-brainer’ as he aims to advance in his professional career.
Mundle signed a four-and-a-half-year contract early on deadline day to become Sunderland’s second signing of the January window, with sporting director Kristjaan Speakman saying they did not expect to be able to sign a long-term aim so quickly.
Mundle is a winger who can play on either flank and told safc.com in his first interview that he was excited to get started. The 20-year-old is expected to be selected in the team to face Middlesbrough on Sunderland, if he receives international clearance in time.
“It feels surreal and I just can’t wait to get started, play in front of the fans and develop as a player,” Mundle said in a statement. It was a no-brainer for me; a club with a rich history, and it felt like the correct decision for me to advance in my career.
“I’m a speedy, skilled winger who is eager to work hard. I’m excited [to get started].
To be honest, the project, the audience, and the staff made it difficult for me to say no. It’s a huge club in England, and it’s the proper next step for me and my career. It’s a fantastic stadium, and I can’t wait for it to be full and to play in front of the fans. I’m just ready to get started now.”
Sunderland paid a seven-figure amount to sign Mundle from Standard Liege, where he left Spurs in the summer in quest of regular senior playing time. Mundle admits that it was a ‘difficult’ experience, but he believes he has learned a lot as he attempts to move forward in his career.
“It was a very good experience, a tough one as well,” he added.
“There were a lot of ups and downs but it moulded me into the man that I am now, it was my first experience of professional football, I learned a lot of lessons there.”
