Former Newcastle United coach Steve Agnew has been dismissed from his role at Aberdeen
Steve Agnew, former Newcastle United coach, has ‘parted company’ with Aberdeen, according to a club statement.
Agnew was named as Aberdeen’s assistant manager under Barry Robson almost precisely a year before. However, following Tuesday’s 1-1 draw against Dundee, which left The Dons seventh in the Scottish Premiership league, the decision was made to remove both Agnew and Robson immediately.
From 2019 until 2021, Agnew was a member of Newcastle United’s coaching staff under Steve Bruce. The 58-year-old previously coached Sheffield Wednesday, Middlesbrough, and Leeds United.
An Aberdeen club statement explained the decision to relieve Agnew and Robson of their duties, saying: “League results and performances over the course of the 2023-24 campaign have been significantly below expectations. Following our failure to defeat Dundee at Pittodrie last night, we decided to change the management team.
Aberdeen chairman Dave Cormack stated, “Although it was a difficult decision, the Board believed the change was necessary and in the best interests of Aberdeen FC.”
“It’s critical that we honour Barry for his major contributions to Aberdeen as a player, coach, and manager. He’s a good man who worked really hard for us, and we wish him and Steve all the best.
“However, as chairman, I accept responsibility, alongside the board, for the managerial upheavals. It’s exhausting for everyone, especially our fans and the managers who worked hard but lost their jobs.
“We have asked First Team Coach Peter Leven, assisted by Scott Anderson, to lead training on an interim basis.”
