Charlton could hijack last-minute deal for £1m striker

Charlton may be focused on a managerial search, but they could yet make January transfers.
Charlton Athletic has had a difficult January, with transfer frustration and a managerial firing to start the year.

While Michael Appleton’s exit may have relieved some fans, the failure to conclude a move for proven striker Jonson Clarke-Harris turned into an uncomfortable transfer drama.

With just over a day till the transfer deadline, the Addicks might sign another League One striker. Here’s your Wednesday transfer roundup.

Latest on in-demand Bristol Rovers striker

With less than a day left in the January transfer window, Bristol Rovers striker Aaron Collins’ future remains uncertain. Charlton Athletic made a bid for the attacker last week, but it was rejected by their League One opponents.

Collins was not named to the Gas squad for Saturday’s match against Oxford United due to transfer interest. Bolton Wanderers are also after the player and have had a £600,000 bid rejected.

Bristol Rovers is thought to value the 26-year-old at £1 million after scoring 38 goals and providing 24 assists in 139 games for the club since 2021.

Bolton manager Ian Evatt has revealed that the club has returned with a second offer for the player, which the Bristol Post reports will be a ‘take it or leave it’ agreement – the sum is expected to be just shy of £1 million.

The Addicks may yet attempt to hijack the deal late on, having seen a deal worth more than £500,000 for Peterborough United’s Jonson Clarke-Harris fall through earlier this month, but the strain of a manager search may have an affect on business.

Portsmouth continue January shopping spree

Portsmouth are likely to continue their January buying binge by signing Carlisle United midfielder Owen Moxon before the transfer market closes on Thursday night.

According to Alan Nixon of The Sun, an agreement is currently being negotiated between the league leaders and Carlisle. Blackpool was also connected with a move, although they now play second fiddle to Portsmouth.

Moxon has declined to sign a new deal in the North West, leaving Carlisle with the option of paying in now or risk losing the star for free in the summer. Portsmouth are looking for more midfield bite after losing Joe Morrell to injury against Oxford United on Tuesday night.

Portsmouth have announced their plans to clear this window by adding Matt Macey, Callum Lang, and Myles Peart-Harris to their roster. John Mousinho’s side then signed Tom McIntyre from struggling Reading for a bargain this week, and they don’t appear to be finished yet despite Moxon interest.
