Breaking news: Sunderland man now set for immediate departure

According to Sky Sports reporter Lyall Thomas, Sunderland midfielder Alex Pritchard is set to undergo a medical with Birmingham City today. Sunderland were taken aback by Pritchard’s recent refusal to play, prompting them to swiftly arrange his departure from the club. Birmingham City acted promptly to secure a deal, with rumors suggesting a fee of £100,000.

Pritchard, who joined Sunderland from Tottenham Hotspur in 2021, played a key role in the team’s promotion to the Championship after four seasons in League One. During his three-and-a-half-year tenure in the north, he made 115 appearances, scoring nine goals and providing 25 assists.

This season, Pritchard featured in 25 matches for Sunderland, contributing one goal and five assists before expressing his desire to move on. Birmingham City seized the opportunity to acquire the highly experienced midfielder, who will undergo a medical today ahead of his transfer to St. Andrew’s, where he will reunite with former Sunderland manager Tony Mowbray and sign a two-and-a-half-year contract.

Mowbray and Pritchard, who previously collaborated at Sunderland, will reunite, with Pritchard expected to seamlessly integrate into Birmingham City’s lineup. He could potentially make his debut as early as Saturday, when Birmingham City faces a challenging match against West Brom in the Championship.

Currently, Mowbray’s team occupies the 20th position in the Championship table, seven points clear of the relegation zone, following a string of disappointing performances under former manager Wayne Rooney.

Since Mowbray took charge, Birmingham City has played three matches, remaining undefeated. They kicked off with a 2-2 draw against Swansea, followed by a 2-1 victory over Hull City in the FA Cup, and then secured a 2-1 win away against Stoke City in league action.

The addition of Pritchard to the squad is hoped to bolster their efforts to climb higher in the division once again.
