Scouting for NFL-caliber talent has altered dramatically throughout the years.
The internet and social media have significantly altered this process, giving coaches and scouts greater access to information than ever before.
They can access hours of tape at any time and learn everything there is to know about a specific player.
Even with this in mind, teams can make blunders during the recruitment process.
Fans have seen this happen every year in the NFL Draft, when teams reach for a specific player while passing over a potential superstar.
After watching how things have played out so far in his career, it is clear that multiple clubs passed on Patrick Mahomes in the 2017 selection.
He was the tenth overall pick, and while the other nine teams may have overlooked him, it was recently revealed that the Kansas City Chiefs were all over him the entire time.
Alex Smith recently spoke with Adam Schefter, and he mentioned that Mahomes was on the Chiefs’ radar after his rookie season.
Chiefs’ GM Brett Veach and HC Andy Reid had former Texas Tech standout Patrick Mahomes on their radar long before most people realized, per former KC QB and now ESPN analyst Alex Smith.

“He was in love with Patrick after his freshman year,” Smith said of Chiefs General Manager Brett Veach.
Brett Veach and the Chiefs’ front management recognized something in him early in his college career and knew they had to pursue him.
Mahomes is widely regarded as the best quarterback in the NFL, and the Chiefs were able to acquire him with the No. 10 pick.
Scouting may pay off handsomely, as evidenced by the Chicago Bears’ selection of Mitchell Trubisky with the second overall pick, which did not produce the desired results.
