Newcastle United are yet to agree a new contract with Joelinton, who has 18 months left on his current deal.
Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe admits there “is a possibility” Joelinton might be moved this summer due to contract problems.
The Brazilian is unlikely to play again this season after having thigh surgery earlier this week. By the time the midfielder returns to fitness, he will have only 12 months left on the contract he signed from Hoffenheim for a then-club-record £40 million in 2019.
Negotiations for a new accord have begun, but the two parties are still far apart. If this trend continues during the summer, Howe concedes the football club will have to make a decision.
Newcastle are under pressure to conform with the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR), which has already sparked conjecture over Kieran Trippier, Miguel Almiron, and Callum Wilson.
“He has 18 months left on his contract,” explained Howe. “As his manager, I am determined that he stays. I adore him as a person and a player, therefore I hope he signs a long-term contract. Of course, there is more to it than that.
“There are Joe’s wishes and what he wants. Before he signs the contract, he must be completely satisfied with everything. We’re not there yet.
When asked if Joelinton could have played his final game for the club, Howe responded, “I’m not a fortune teller, and I certainly hope that’s not the case.” That is possible, but I am not sure. A club is vulnerable when it has 18 months left on its contract.
“The club will need to sign Joe to a longer-term contract, or he could be sold in the summer. That is simply the reality of the situation.
The 27-year-old is eager to be rewarded for his extraordinary turnaround under Howe, which saw him move from being considered a flop to a vital player in his first two-and-a-half seasons.
Joelinton has 25 goals and 15 assists in 180 games for Newcastle. Last year, Joelinton made his Brazil debut.
