Southampton are reportedly interested in recruiting Liverpool’s Calvin Ramsay after his loan at Preston North End expired.
Calvin Ramsay is once again connected with a Championship team vying for promotion.
Ramsay’s loan stay at PNE ended earlier this month after he failed to make an impact after signing from Liverpool.
Last week, Leeds United was connected with signing Ramsay on loan for the second half of the season.
According to the Daily Mail, Southampton has joined the race for Ramsay and is monitoring his condition as the transfer deadline approaches.
The Saints have now gone 21 games unbeaten and are considering signing Ramsay to help their promotion campaign.
Liverpool will have to consider Ramsay’s next move, although Southampton may not guarantee the Scot first-team minutes.
Southampton already have a top right back in Kyle Walker-Peters, so Ramsay would likely have to play as a backup to the former Tottenham Hotspur star.
Ramsay barely played for PNE so Liverpool will be wary of that risk as both Leeds and Southampton emerge as contenders to sign him.
Seeing Calvin Ramsay sign for a promotion contender would sting for PNE fans
Ramsay was viewed as the ideal signing to fight alongside Brad Potts for the right wing back position at PNE.
Ramsay impressed as Aberdeen’s attack-minded right back before joining Liverpool for £6.5 million in the summer of 2022.
Ramsay, meanwhile, missed the most of last season and was unable to make an impression at North End.
A late arrival for pre-season, an injury setback, and a case of COVID – everything that could have gone wrong for Ramsay did, and it was no surprise when his loan expired.
Potts has shown fatigued of late, and not even giving Ramsay a chance in Championship play seems a mistake; the Scot made just one league start throughout his tenure at PNE.
Seeing Ramsay go from barely playing for North End to signing for a promotion-chasing team – either Leeds or Southampton – would have many wondering why he didn’t have more opportunities to flourish.
Injuries and illness pushed him back, but Ryan Lowe stated in December that Ramsay was not being selected – not even for the bench.
PNE are presently short on wing backs and might still see Ramsay play a role in a promotion push, which would just raise further concerns about why we hardly saw him in a North End shirt.
