Vic Fangio will not return to the Dolphins in 2024.
The organization announced on Wednesday that Fangio and Miami had amicably agreed to part ways after one season as defensive coordinator.
“I would want to thank Vic for his contributions in 2023. “When we evaluated the season, it became clear that this was the best path forward for all parties involved,” head coach Mike McDaniel said in a statement. “Now, we must urgently focus on 2024 and beyond in order to find the best candidate to lead our defense in the future.” We remain strongly committed to developing our players and constructing a winning squad with long-term success.”
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Miami is enabling Fangio to opt out of his contract to go closer to his family in Pennsylvania. Schefter also says that Fangio is a top candidate for the Eagles’ defensive coordinator position.
Fangio worked as a consultant in 2022. According to reports, he would have been Philadelphia’s top candidate to replace previous coordinator Jonathan Gannon if the team had realized Gannon was on pace to become the Cardinals’ head coach.
In 2023, the Dolphins ranked 10th in yards allowed and 22nd in points allowed. The team will now require a third defensive coordinator in three seasons under McDaniel.
