Almiron has been linked with a transfer away from St James’ Park this month, but Eddie Howe’s options are already light with several Newcastle United stars still carrying injuries
Eddie Howe is optimistic about the return of several attacking choices, especially considering the potential departure of Miguel Almiron during the January transfer window. There are indications that Saudi Arabian club Al-Shabab has reached a “tentative agreement” with Newcastle United for the Paraguayan forward, who recently extended his contract with the Magpies until 2026.
Losing Almiron would create a shortage of options in the attacking third for Newcastle, especially when other players in similar positions are currently unavailable for selection. However, the pressure could soon ease as injured players are on track for a comeback.
With the potential departure of Almiron in mind, Newcastle is assessing when those capable of stepping up to fill the void might be returning to active play.
Elliot Anderson has been absent from the club since the conclusion of October due to a stress fracture in his back. Initially, Howe estimated a two-month recovery period for the midfielder, but he recently acknowledged that it is likely to extend to 12 weeks on the sidelines for the Scottish player. Consequently, Anderson might make a comeback for the away match against Aston Villa on January 30.
In December, Howe provided an update on the 21-year-old, stating, “He’s continuing his work behind the scenes. He’s having another scan to assess his healing progress. We’ll await the results, but he’s expected to be out for the initially estimated 12 weeks. Elliot has consulted with a specialist to evaluate his condition, as it’s a challenging injury that has limited his activity due to a stress fracture in the back.”
Harvey Barnes is another player facing a prolonged absence, having last played for the club in September due to a toe injury. While Barnes has resumed running exercises, he is not yet back in full training. Howe provided an update on the former Leicester City player, stating last week, “Harvey is getting closer. He hasn’t been training with the group, but he’s been running on the grass with his boots back on and kicking balls around. We’re pleased with his progress currently, but there’s still a long way to go.”
Two players nearing a return to contention are Jacob Murphy and Callum Wilson, both potentially ready by the end of the month. Murphy has been dealing with a shoulder setback, while Wilson has been nursing a calf issue.
