Champions League club want £20m striker after Newcastle United snub

AC Milan is interested in signing Callum Wilson from Newcastle United during the January transfer window.

Callum Wilson, the Newcastle United striker, has surfaced as a transfer target for two prominent European clubs this month.

After Newcastle rejected a loan offer from La Liga club Atletico Madrid for the 31-year-old striker, AC Milan is now being connected. According to Mail Sport, Milan is now interested in signing Wilson permanently.

Wilson has started only 10 of The Magpies’ 31 matches this season, but he has scored eight goals. He went to AC Milan with Newcastle earlier this season, where he came off the bench in a 0-0 Champions League group stage match at San Siro.

Wilson, who joined Newcastle from AFC Bournemouth for £20 million in 2020, has 45 Premier League goals in 89 games. Only Peter Beardsley (47) and Alan Shearer (148) have more Premier League goals for the club.

This month, Newcastle are keen to keep key players such as Wilson and Kieran Trippier despite international transfer interest. Over the weekend, Newcastle turned down a bid from Bayern Munich for Trippier.

However, with the club attempting to raise transfer funds while adhering to Financial Fair Play standards, any large offers for their older stars in particular would have to be carefully weighed.

Wilson is currently out of action for Newcastle due to a calf injury, but he is expected to return soon. Head coach Eddie Howe has set the end-of-month away trip to Aston Villa as his No. 9’s expected return date.
