Newcastle United have reportedly ‘made it clear’ that Callum Wilson and Kieran Trippier are not available for sale this month.
According to the Telegraph’s Luke Edwards, the club’s administration has decided to maintain two of its most experienced players, despite the fact that both are coveted by European clubs.
Newcastle CEO Darren Eales recently confirmed the club’s need to comply with Financial Fair Play (FFP) laws, as well as the Premier League’s tough Profit and Sustainability guidelines, and hinted that a high-profile player could be moved to assist the club balance its books.
As a result, many supporters expected Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak to face criticism.
However, the last 48 hours have seen captain Trippier, 33, emerge as a shock mid-season target for Bayern Munich and striker Wilson, 31, catch the attention of Atletico Madrid.
And even though both deals remain possibilities, Edwards is reporting the club have made it abundantly clear they’re not willing to see either player leave this month.
It’s hardly surprising that the Magpies need to sell, but witnessing the departure of two of their most experienced players in the middle of the season would be quite shocking and, frankly, illogical.
Considering that Wilson and Isak are the only two dedicated strikers under Eddie Howe, it doesn’t make sense to let go of either of them midway through the campaign, especially when securing European qualification could significantly alleviate the club’s financial challenges in the long term.
The same logic applies to Trippier. Despite being in the later stages of his career, he remains a crucial figure in the Newcastle dressing room. Given the limited options in defense, it’s not in the club’s best interest to see him leave this month—unless, of course, an excessively generous offer is presented, one that is too tempting to reject.
In that case, expect the northeast giants to bid farewell to the player who played a pivotal role in initiating their new era.
