Less than a week ago, the French media reported that Burnley were interested in signing Marseille’s Pape Gueye.
The player’s contract in the south of France is about to expire in six months, making him an appealing alternative for clubs looking for aid in the center of the pitch.
What’s even better for Burnley, according to L’Equipe, is that Gueye is refusing to accept Marseille’s contract extension proposals, claiming that he deserves to be paid as much as the club captain, Valentin Rongier.
This is something the Ligue 1 side cannot do, since his importance to their plans isn’t the same as the French midfielder’s, which is why the two parties are at a bit of an impasse.
So, in order to avoid a situation similar to that of Boubacar Kamara, who left on a free for Aston Villa, they would like him to ‘go via the front door’ by transferring in January.
Burnley are not specifically mentioned, but the Premier League is mentioned as Marseille’s preferred destination for the player, since they are aware of the attention and money available.
With the French club still waiting to hear back from Gueye on their second contract renewal offer, there is little chance of a deal being reached, allowing Vincent Kompany and the Clarets to have a free and easy run at the midfielder, who scored for Senegal against Gambia in a 3-0 win on Monday.
