Done deal: Southampton sign midfielder on a three-and-a-half-year deal

Saints have signed Joe O’Brien Whitmarsh, a highly rated young Irish midfielder.

According to the Daily Echo, the 18-year-old Cork City player has signed a three-and-a-half-year contract with St Mary’s until June 2027.

The child was a target for Premier League Everton, League One Derby County, and other Category One academies.

O’Brien Whitmarsh, who shares his surname with his mother, who died in 2016, will join the under-21 team.

O’Brien Whitmarsh, who made his senior debut in March, quickly established himself as a valuable member of the Cork squad.

O’Brien Whitmarsh overcame a major knee injury aged 16 to make his way into the senior team’s plans.

He scored four goals in 23 Premier League appearances despite the club’s problems, which led to relegation.

In December, he went on trial at Staplewood, and Saints confirmed his signing as the January transfer market opened.

O’Brien Whitmarsh is a skillful midfielder who enjoys moving forward. His expertise in men’s football enhances his physical abilities.

He has represented the Republic of Ireland under-15s and under-18s and is expected to pursue a senior career.

Saints academy recruiters have identified the Irish leagues as a potential hotbed for value talent, as first reported by the Daily Echo.
