Charlton Athletic make contract offer for 29-year-old and now waiting for club response

Charlton Athletic are still waiting for a response from Peterborough United’s Jonson Clarke-Harris after making a significant contract offer, according to the Peterborough Telegraph.

Charlton Athletic are among the clubs pursuing Peterborough United forward Clarke-Harris this month. The Posh talisman’s contract expires at the end of the season, and for the right price, he may leave London Road.

Last week, it was claimed that the Addicks and their League One opponents had agreed on a cost of roughly £500,000. However, more developments are yet to emerge, and the 29-year-old will remain a Peterborough player for the time being.

Posh manager Darren Ferguson has revealed that contract conditions have still to be negotiated. According to the Peterborough Telegraph, the price on offer is ‘substantial’, but Clarke-Harris may wait to see if better bids arrive. He said:

“Johnno has not yet agreed personal terms and I’m not sure how long Charlton will wait.

“It’s up to Johnno what happens. It’s in his hands. He’s been fantastic for us, but he knows his playing time here will be limited now so he needs a fresh challenge.”

It is added that while Wrexham showed an interest, they’re now looking elsewhere.

Biding his time

Clarke-Harris has been a significant figure for Peterborough United throughout the years, but his contract situation means a transfer away is best for everyone. Posh appear to be preferring other strikers, but their stance creates a significant opportunity for possible suitors.

A striker with 104 goals in 262 League One games is rarely available. Charlton Athletic will be aiming to take advantage of this opportunity, but with the player taking his time before making a choice, there is still work to be done.

Clarke-Harris has starred in the third tier and is also a good striker in the Championship.

He’ll be keen to make sure this next move is the best one for him, so time will tell if he sees a switch to The Valley as his perfect option.
