Why £34m-rated Sunderland target was dropped from squad amid transfer rumours

The latest on the situation regarding Amad Diallo and his position at Manchester United.

Erik ten Hag left Sunderland loan target Amad Diallo out of Manchester United’s FA Cup victory over Wigan Athletic on Monday evening.

United won 2-0 without Amad, thanks to Diogo Dalot’s magnificent curling shot in the 22nd minute, followed by Bruno Fernandes’ penalty conversion in the second half.

Amad, 21, impressed on loan at Sunderland last season, scoring 14 Championship goals, and the Black Cats were among numerous clubs monitoring the player’s position this summer. That was before Amad suffered a severe knee injury in preseason, forcing him to miss the first part of the season.

Amad, who joined Manchester United for approximately £34 million, returned to ten Hag’s squad to face Nottingham Forest in the Premier League earlier this month and was named to the bench. The offensive midfielder came on as a second-half substitute but was unable to prevent his team from losing 2-1.

Amad’s name has also been linked with a move to Birmingham City, who recently hired former Sunderland manager Tony Mowbray, and league leaders Leicester City during the winter transfer window.

However, eyebrows were raised when Amad did not appear at all against Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup, with many claiming that it would have been the ideal game for him to start. However, it has been verified that the player missed the match due to illness, rather than any transfer-related activities.
