January transfer: Southampton now pushing to confirm move for 26-year-old

SAINTS are allegedly preparing to complete the loan signing of AFC Bournemouth winger David Brooks.

The Wales international, who was born in Warrington, has only made two Premier League starts this season and may be hoping for more.

Brooks, 26, has 19 goals and 13 assists for Bournemouth in the Premier League and Championship since signing in 2018.

Brooks helped the Cherries qualify for the playoffs in the 2020-21 Championship season, but he missed much of their promotion campaign the following season due to sickness.

The dynamic forward was diagnosed with Stage II Hodgkin lymphoma and underwent chemotherapy before going cancer-free in March 2022.

Brooks returned a year later, and scored emotional goals for Wales and Bournemouth in September 2023.

The Daily Echo understands Brooks is on Southampton’s list of potential attacking additions during the January transfer window.

According to PA Media, the Saints are looking to sign Brooks on a loan until the end of the season.

Brooks came via Manchester City’s academy, and Saints director of football Jason Wilcox coached the under-18s during his final years.

However, Leeds United have been linked with Brooks this month and might pose a challenge to obtaining his signature.

When asked about Brooks’ short-term future before the transfer market opened, Cherries manager Andoni Iraola told the Daily Echo: “It is not about one individual circumstance.

“It’s a matter sometimes of what they think. David the other day came on and played very good minutes. Some players are not getting the minutes they want.

“They have to discuss with the club and take the best option for everyone. Sometimes they leave because all think it is the best thing, sometimes they stay.

“But right now, before the market opens, I cannot and I will not speak about individual situations.”
