Newcastle United transfers: Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on the pursuit of Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips.
Newcastle United are considering signing Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips this January.
The England international is poised to leave Etihad Stadium this month in search of regular playing time ahead of Euro 2024. The 28-year-old has made only two appearances in all competitions for Manchester City this season and just two Premier League starts since his £42 million move from Leeds United in 2022.
Newcastle are chasing a loan move for Phillips until the end of the season, with Manchester City demanding a loan fee in excess of £7 million for the transfer. Juventus have also been linked with a deal for Phillips, who is believed to favor Newcastle.
However, the Serie A club has now cooled its interest, leaving Newcastle in prime position to make a deal. The Magpies are trying to improve their midfield after losing Sandro Tonali for the rest of the season due to a 10-month betting ban.
Tonali is a guy Newcastle ‘needs to replace’ in January, according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, with Phillips being a’very good’ alternative to come in.
Romano told The Analyst: “Newcastle have been considering a move for Phillips since December.” He is one of the names on their list.
“Newcastle need to replace Tonali, while Phillips wants to play more to ensure he has enough game time for Euro 2024. Juventus was interested in Phillips, but the transaction is virtually over. He added: “In my opinion, it would be a very good call from Newcastle; Phillips can have an immediate impact, knows Premier League football well, and is very eager. “A crucial point.”
