Newcastle United remain without several senior players for Saturday afternoon’s derby clash away to Sunderland.
Callum Wilson won’t be the sole absentee for Newcastle United in their upcoming clashes against Sunderland and Manchester City. The team’s No.9 was missing from the 4-2 loss against Liverpool on New Year’s Day due to a calf problem picked up during the Boxing Day defeat against Nottingham Forest. Addressing the media at Anfield, United head coach Eddie Howe promptly confirmed Wilson’s unavailability for the next two matches.
Wilson adds to an already extensive injury roster. Despite hopes of Joe Willock, Harvey Barnes, and Elliot Anderson nearing a return, according to the Daily Mail’s Craig Hope, the trio have a slim chance of featuring before the January winter break.
Willock endured a five-month absence due to hamstring and Achilles issues before returning in October. However, the former Arsenal player featured only six times before a recurrence of the latter problem.
Barnes is facing a total absence of four months owing to a foot injury sustained during the 8-0 victory against Sheffield United in September. Despite an expected return in December, a setback occurred, potentially leading to surgery if the 26-year-old can’t resume play in the coming weeks.
Anderson has been sidelined for nearly three months with a stress fracture in his back. While the injury is healing, progress remains slow, and Newcastle won’t rush the return of the Whitley Bay-born midfielder.
Additionally, Kieran Trippier might miss the FA Cup third-round derby at the Stadium of Light due to a groin problem, while a week later, Newcastle faces Manchester City at home.
