Newcastle could sign ‘really good’ £9m defender from Premier League rivals

As we approach the end of the third day of the transfer window, Newcastle United still has no incoming transactions.

But it’s not like we need them. Why rush with only 12 players unavailable and in poor form?

According to Football Transfers, Newcastle are trying to sign Ben Godfrey from struggling Everton for as cheap as £9 million.

Carlo Ancelotti is a big fan of Ben Godfrey

Godfrey’s versatility and low asking price are said to be what is attracting Newcastle.

The 25-year-old defender can play at right-back as well as across the center of defense, which is something Newcastle desperately needs to strengthen.

Carlo Ancelotti, the manager of Real Madrid, was a huge fan of Godfrey during his time as Everton manager, describing him as a’really good’ player while deciding whether to bring him to Everton from Norwich for £20 million.

A deal for Godfrey could be one to watch

Godfrey, like Dan Burn, would be another of those signings. He’s not going to rouse the fans and have them lining the streets outside the Gallowgate to greet his arrival, but he’d be a very solid, dependable addition to the squad.

The 25-year-old has been banished to the bench by Sean Dyche at Everton, as the manager prefers his former Burnley teammate James Tarkowski. Godfrey has played a full 90 minutes in one of his two Premier League appearances this season, with the other being a one-minute cameo.

With that in mind, it won’t take much to persuade Godfrey to relocate, and at only £9 million, Newcastle is clearly willing to take the risk.  This could be one to watch.
