Newcastle United remains in contention to secure the transfer of Manchester City’s midfielder Kalvin Phillips, despite recent transfer speculation linking him to Paris Saint-Germain. According to Fabrizio Romano’s latest update in his exclusive interview with CaughtOffside for the Daily Briefing column, there’s no concrete evidence of Phillips moving to PSG, with Romano asserting that Newcastle is still actively pursuing the England international.
While Phillips has seen limited playtime at Man City, signaling an imminent departure, Romano’s insights suggest that any reported PSG interest might not hold substantial weight. Instead, Newcastle’s pursuit remains strong, especially with the club’s need for midfield reinforcement following Sandro Tonali’s ban. Eddie Howe’s playing style aligns well with Phillips’ attributes, making him a potentially good fit for the Magpies.
However, Romano also hints at the possibility of Juventus entering the fray as contenders for the 28-year-old’s signature in the January transfer window.
Romano has also stated that this will not be a cheap transaction, with City evidently unwilling to be pushed around on this one, even if Phillips isn’t a first-team regular.
“I’m not aware of talks between Man City and PSG for Kalvin Phillips as of now, despite rumours,” Romano stated in a statement.
“Newcastle are not out of the race; they are still interested in Phillips, as is Juventus, but it all depends on loan conditions because it is not a cheap one.” Phillips will depart City in any situation.”
