Michael Appleton breaks silence on 28-year-old Charlton target spotted at The Valley

Michael Appleton, manager of Charlton Athletic, has commented on the probable signing of Macaulay Gillesphey from Plymouth Argyle.
Charlton Athletic are hoping to make a speedy start to the January transfer window, and their first acquisition appears to be not far away.

Gillesphey, a Plymouth Argyle defender, was there at the Addicks’ 2-1 defeat to Oxford United yesterday.

Yesterday, reporter Darren Witcoop broke the news of Charlton Athletic’s interest in Gillesphey, and it appears a deal is on the horizon.

Appleton kept his cards close to his breast when speaking to London News Online about the possible arrival of Gillesphey. He stated:

“Well until it is done, I don’t want to say too much. You never say never in this game but until someone actually tells me that it is finally done and dusted them I don’t really want to comment too much.

“Clearly, like I’ve said, we need to do the ones who can impact the 11 – or potentially impact the 11. It clearly makes it that little bit harder.”

A positive start

The Addicks have had another terrible start to their League One season.

Appleton’s team is 14th in the third division, six points above the relegation zone.

Charlton Athletic have been underperforming for quite some time, but it appears that they are motivated to improve this month, and thus far, while early days, the links are promising.

Gillesphey, 28, played 35 League One appearances for Plymouth Argyle last season, helping the club gain promotion to the Championship.

He brings a plethora of knowledge to the Valley and would be a welcome addition.

Clarke-Harris, on the other hand, would be a fantastic acquisition. The goalscorer has a strong track record at this level and has been heavily pursued in recent transfer windows.

The Addicks’ next game is against Port Vale, in which they will strive to snap their six-game winless streak.

If they lose there, their opponents will likely leapfrog them and the margin to the drop zone will narrow even more.
