Southampton are attempting to sign Manchester United winger Amad Diallo on loan ahead of the January transfer window, according to Football Insider.
The Saints, who are vying for promotion back to the Premier League this season, have long admired the 21-year-old.
In July, Football Insider stated that Southampton had approached Manchester United about loaning Diallo for the 2023-24 season.
However, the Ivory Coast international suffered a catastrophic knee injury during pre-season and is only now making his first-team debut.
A contract is expected to be completed in January, with Diallo poised to make an impact in the 2023-24 season.
The winger joined Manchester United in 2021 for a reported sum of £37 million, however he has only made nine appearances for the club, scoring once.
Diallo scored 14 goals and had four assists in 43 appearances in all competitions for Sunderland last season after a disastrous loan spell at Rangers the previous season.
He assisted Sunderland in reaching the playoff semi-finals, where they were defeated by Luton Town over two legs.
On December 12, Football Insider revealed that Leicester City and Sunderland are both interested in taking the Manchester United winger on loan for the second half of the 2023-24 season.
However, it is believed that Russell Martin’s Southampton and his recruitment team are putting in the most effort to sign Diallo at this time.
The 21-year-old was nominated to the Ivory Coast’s preliminary team for the African Cup of Nations next month, but it is uncertain whether he will play in the final.
Southampton are fourth in the Championship, ten points off of an automatic promotion spot after being relegated from the Premier League previous season.
