Eddie Howe suggests ‘outstanding’ Newcastle player could be involved vs Luton

Newcastle United are concerned about Anthony Gordon’s fitness ahead of Saturday’s encounter against Luton Town.

The 22-year-old is a significant doubt after being substituted during Chelsea’s Carabao Cup defeat. In the second minute, he was the victim of a brutal tackle from Moises Caicedo that did not result in a red card.

He appeared to be fine to continue, but he went down again early in the second half, and his game was done.

Anthony Gordon was the latest Newcastle player to go down with an injury, and his absence would leave the Magpies lacking in attack. If he is unable to play, Matt Ritchie could take his place against Luton. Since December 2021, he has not started a Premier League game.

Gordon, however, has not been officially ruled out, and Eddie Howe has given fans some optimism that the Toon number 10 may play at Kenilworth Road this weekend.

Eddie Howe provides an update on Anthony Gordon injury

Howe speaks to the media ahead of Newcastle’s game against Luton Town. He gave an update on Gordon’s status after he was injured on Tuesday night.

“Anthony [Gordon] was a little sore,” he explained.

“It was a terrible test for him. I’m quite dissatisfied in the tackle.

“We will see how he is today.”

Big boost for Newcastle if Gordon is fit to play against Luton Town

With Newcastle yet to make a definitive decision on Gordon, the fact that he is still in the running is reassuring. That would imply that the injury is not significant.

It’s always difficult to tell with Howe. His injury bulletins are frequently vague, and he rarely delivers the complete picture when speaking to the media about his players.

He has mentioned that a late decision on Gordon will be made, and hopefully that conclusion will be that he is fit enough to play. We need him to play against Luton because he is our most prolific player in the final third.

The winger is having a fantastic season, with six goals and six assists thus far. His numbers are excellent, and it would be terrific if he could improve on them on Saturday.

That could happen or not, but there is a potential he will be involved against Luton. That is a huge plus considering how horrible Caicedo’s tackle was.
