Michael Beale has stated his goals for Sunderland before the conclusion of the season.
Sunderland manager Tony Mowbray was fired more than two weeks ago, raising eyebrows.
The 60-year-old spent a mostly successful 17 months at the club, guiding them to the play-offs last season and keeping them on the outside of the top six this season.
Kyril Louis-Dreyfus, on the other hand, elected to fire the veteran because he wanted to take a different approach by selecting a youthful manager who could bring new ideas to the club.
Will Still and Kim Hellberg, both talented managers, were mentioned, but despite his previous terrible term at Rangers, Michael Beale is the man he’s put his trust in.
He was fired as manager in October after a disastrous ten months in charge, so the chance to coach Sunderland was one he couldn’t pass up.
Beale takes over an incredibly talented group at the Stadium of Light, which is currently in a good league position, with only three points separating them from a spot in the top six.
Michael Beale outlines his targets at Sunderland this season
After taking over from Mowbray’s firm foundations, Beale believes that he would not make ‘dramatic changes’ in the short term, but he is aware of the goals he must achieve.
The 43-year-old believes it is his responsibility to keep Sunderland in the top six so that they can push on at the conclusion of the season and possibly win promotion to the Premier League.
“The club’s got a vision and processes I really believe in to get to where we all want to go, which is back to the Premier League,” he told the Sunderland Echo.
“That’s what the fans want, and the fans’ expectations drive the club.” That is extremely crucial. Every single player in our locker room aspires to play in the Premier League. It’s a young dressing room, and that’s where we believe our players’ potential lies.”
Can Beale lead Sunderland into the play-offs?
Given his previous struggles at Rangers, it’s difficult for supporters to get enthused about this hiring, but he’s spoken well since being appointed, and he’ll need to translate those words into success on the field.
Sunderland face Hull City, Preston North End, and Ipswich Town in three of their next five games, all of which are vying for a place in the play-offs or automatic promotion.
Those potentially season-defining games, in particular, will show whether Beale and his team are up to the task.
Getting Jack Clarke to fire on all cylinders could be the key to attaining excellent results across the board.
Clarke has 10 Championship goals this season, but only one of them has come in his last eight games.
On his day, he’s one of the best players in the division, and the incredible talent will be crucial in their pursuit of the top six.
