Southampton set-piece coach Andreas Georgson has left the club to become manager of Norwegian club Lillestrom SK, it has been confirmed.
Southampton hired Russell Martin as their new manager in the summer. In the weeks and months following his arrival, the former MK Dons and Swansea City manager set about assembling his St. Mary’s backroom staff.
Georgson, a Swedish coach, was among those who joined as set-piece coach. He’d previously worked for Arsenal and Brentford, as well as Malmo, where he held a variety of positions, including caretaker manager.
However, it has now been revealed that the 38-year-old has secured his first permanent position in the dugout. Southampton have announced Georgson’s resignation, as he returns to Scandinavia to take over as manager of Lillestrom SK, who play in Norway’s top flight.
His time at Southampton was brief, but as a set-piece specialist, his departure will be felt by Martin.
a victory for the Saints
Under Martin, Southampton are really hitting their stride in the Championship. His backroom staff will have played a vital role in this, and given Georgson’s expertise as a coach, he was likely a valuable asset in areas other than set-piece circumstances.
Martin will be devastated by his departure, which comes only a few months after bringing him on board. However, the youthful manager will be hoping that his and the club’s good contacts in the game would allow them to bring in a suitable replacement sooner rather than later.
If that fails, someone within the club who is already familiar with the manager’s requirements could be brought in as an in-house substitute. That would be an easy solution, but only time will tell how the situation develops.
