The Magpies are still looking to replace Sandro Tonali…
Following a fantastic season in which they qualified for the Champions League, Newcastle United have suffered from their own success this season, with their performances failing to satisfy rising expectations. Eddie Howe has struggled to balance tournaments outside of Europe and outside of the Premier League’s top four and has faced the consequences of Newcastle’s unsuccessful recruitment in the summer transfer window.
The Magpies’ manager will not make the same mistake again. Instead, Howe will be hoping that his team will only improve from here and make up for a dismal summer. As a result, St James’ Park may make a second attempt to sign a certain outstanding player.
Newcastle transfer news
When the likes of Sandro Tonali, Lewis Hall, Harvey Barnes and Tino Livramento all arrived in the summer, Newcastle had hope that they would not only compete for a place in the Premier League’s top four once again but also cause a few shocks in the Champions League. To their credit, a 4-1 thumping of Paris Saint-Germain certainly ticked that second box, though things quickly went downhill in Europe from there.
Months after those arrivals, with Tonali banned, Hall struggling for minutes, Barnes injured and Livramento the only one starring, Newcastle’s hope has dwindled.

Newcastle are reportedly interested in signing Inter Milan midfielder Nicolo Barella, who is also being pursued by Liverpool. Newcastle’s previous reported attempts to buy Barella were unsuccessful, with their most recent move occurring prior to signing Tonali during the summer window.
According to Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke, Barella was not interested in joining Newcastle in the summer, hence the deal fell through. Those at St James’ Park will hope that isn’t the case these days, as they try to make a second attempt to entice him to join them in the Premier League.
“Fantastic” Barella is an upgrade on Tonali
Barella would not merely be a replacement for Tonali at Newcastle; he would be an improvement over his Italian counterpart. The Inter Milan player has significantly more experience than his former Serie A adversary and was just in the Champions League final. Tonali may even become a forgotten figure by the time he returns if Newcastle can acquire his signature. Meanwhile, Barella’s statistics reveal that the Magpies would be receiving one of the top midfielders in the world.
After earning the acclaim of Liverpool great Jamie Carragher for his exploits, the former defender spoke about Barella on CBS Sport, saying, “He was fantastic.” There is even rumors of him being linked to my team, Liverpool, for next season. So, if it happens, we may have to pay an extra £10 million on top of the price tag.”
