Newcastle United co-owner issues ‘strong’ message after Carabao Cup exit

Newcastle United were dumped out of the Carabao Cup by Chelsea on penalties.

Newcastle United co-owner Jamie Reuben has spoken out following the club’s Carabao Cup exit at the hands of Chelsea.

Eddie Howe’s team were 90 seconds away from advancing to the semi-finals after Callum Wilson’s first-half opening, but a blunder by Kieran Trippier allowed Mykhailo Mudryk to equalize in the second minute of stoppage time.

Trippier’s night was ruined when he missed his penalty, while Matt Ritchie’s strike was saved by Blues goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic. The hosts won 4-2 on penalties, sending United out of their second cup competition in six days following their Champions League defeat last week.

“It’s always disappointing when you come this close,” Reuben remarked after the game, “but we will regroup and go again – thank you for your support for @nufc tonight and for our main man Trippier.”

Reuben’s words are encouraging, which will come as no surprise to Howe.

“I’ve spoken with them [the owners] – I have regular conversations with them all,” Howe stated following the club’s withdrawal from the Champions League last week. “They’ve been nothing but supportive, not just during this period, but throughout my entire stay here.”

“As I’ve said many times, I believe they see what happens behind closed doors and have close relationships with the players.” We’re like a family and incredibly close.”It’s not just me with them; everyone associated with the club is there. I think it’s just the sense that they’re incredibly supportive of the players and recognize how much they’ve given.

“They can see the effort on the pitch, which I believe is the most important thing.” The evidence on the pitch of what we’re offering is always crucial. How serious are we? Are we giving our all there? And I believe we have.

“As a result, I have no regrets about what the players have given during this Champions League campaign.” I may have regrets about a few other things, but not about what the players have given. That is always the most important judgment for me.”
