Ex-Burnley man makes shock move and comes out of retirement

George Boyd, a former Burnley player, has joined a non-league club after deciding to come out of retirement.
The 38-year-old announced his retirement in 2021, capping up a 19-year professional career.

However, the former Claret has announced a stunning recovery to join Wythenshawe Town in the North West Counties League Premier Division.
Boyd appeared in over 100 games for Burnley between 2014 and 2017, having joining from Hull City for a reported £3 million cost.

In his debut season at Turf Moor, he was named player of the year before helping Sean Dyche’s side return to the Premier League for the first time in 2015/16.

The next season, Boyd appeared in 36 of Burnley’s 38 league games as the club finished 16th in the Premier League.

The offensive midfielder was best known for his six-year stint at Peterborough United between 2007 and 2013. Boyd was a talismanic figure for Posh, participating in three promotion-winning campaigns.

Posh brought him back in 2019, but his second stint did not go as well as the first.

Boyd also played for Stevenage, Nottingham Forest, Sheffield Wednesday, and Salford City, as well as Scotland, where he gained two caps.

He isn’t the only former Claret to play in non-league, with Matt Lowton joining Witton Albion in the eighth division of English football.

Wythenshawe are currently top of the North West Counties League Premier Division, which is the ninth division of English football.
