Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe says Anthony Gordon suffered a ‘really nasty looking knock’ in the Carabao Cup quarter-final defeat to Chelsea on Tuesday night.
Moises Caicedo viciously scythed Gordon down after just two minutes at Stamford Bridge, with the Blues midfielder lucky to avoid a red card for the studs-up challenge into the back of the winger’s leg.
The Newcastle player continued, but fell early in the second half and was replaced by Matt Ritchie.
Howe claims that the former Everton man did sustain an injury, and while he did not express his own opinion, he claims that others have told him that Caicedo should have been sent off.
‘Anthony Gordon got a really severe looking knock,’ Newcastle manager stated. ‘I haven’t seen it for myself, but people are telling me it’s a red card.’
The Magpies’ manager revealed that Sven Botman has not suffered another injury, but that he was only supposed to play half a match, although Emil Krafth did have an issue.
‘Botman was planned, and 45 minutes was a good first step for him,’ Howe said of the defender. ‘Krafth suffered a hit.’
Former Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given thought Caicedo was fortunate not to get sent off for his lunge on Gordon, with the lack of VAR likely protecting the Chelsea player.
‘Two minutes in may have been the only thing that saved him,’ Given told Sky Sports. ‘It’s the start of the game, football is all about entertainment, and we want to see 11 vs 11 on the field.
‘However, if we had VAR tonight, that freeze is nowhere near the ball, he’s not even trying to play the ball, studs down the back of his leg, it’s a horrible tackle.’
Newcastle return to Premier League action at Luton Town on Saturday.
