Newcastle benefited from a VAR judgment in the semi-final first-leg win at Southampton last season, when Adam Armstrong had a goal ruled out due to a check. The Magpies went on to win the tie 3-1 on aggregate, advancing to the final.

Manchester United defeated Eddie Howe’s side 2-0 in the final at Wembley Stadium. They did, however, exact some retaliation last month, knocking The Red Devils out of this season’s competition with a 3-0 win at Old Trafford.

Newcastle advanced to the quarter-finals by defeating Manchester City and Manchester United.
