Eddie Howe rules Newcastle star out for more than seven weeks after ‘difficult’ injury

The Newcastle United midfielder hasn’t played for seven weeks and a return date is currently unclear

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has issued an update on Elliot Anderson’s injury recovery.

Because of a stress fracture in his back, the Geordie midfielder has not played since the 4-0 win over Crystal Palace at St James’ Park on October 21.

Anderson has been out for seven weeks, and while the 21-year-old’s injury is improving, a comeback date is presently unknown.
Howe discussed Anderson’s situation ahead of tonight’s Carabao Cup quarter-final match against Chelsea.

“Elliot has been to see another specialist for a review of where he stands,” Howe said to reporters. “He’s had a difficult injury because he hasn’t been able to do much.” The back has a stress fracture.

“He’s had various scans to see if it’s healing and it is healing but slowly as those types of injuries tend to do.”The second assessment he received was similar to the first, if that makes sense, which is good but little annoying in terms of timescale.”

Anderson has made 12 appearances in three competitions this season, including four starts, in the Premier League, Champions League, and Carabao Cup.

With injuries decimating Howe’s squad in recent months, the matches he has missed are a chance lost.

“Elliot is hugely frustrated, and we’re hugely frustrated because it was a key moment in his career,” Howe confessed in October. This was his breakthrough season in terms of attempting to obtain more starts, and he was succeeding; he was well on his way to being a valuable first-team player.

“Hugely disappointing for him and for us because his versatility was important, he could play different roles but again, we have to accept the situation and try and get him back to his best.”

Prior to his injury, England and Scotland have expressed an interest in his international affiliations.
