26-year-old suffer injury blow and will miss Sunderland v Newcastle FA Cup tie

Harvey Barnes 26, is set to miss the entire Christmas programme and FA Cup third round day away to Sunderland

Harvey Barnes has been ruled out for at least another five weeks following a re-evaluation at Newcastle United’s training complex.

After leaving the 8-0 away triumph at Sheffield United with a toe injury, the £38million man had been making fantastic progress over the autumn. However, Barnes has now experienced a setback and was “feeling pain” in his foot, according to Eddie Howe last week.

“That will be an ongoing process with Harvey,” Howe said ahead of the Carabao Cup trip to Chelsea. He expects to return in four to five weeks. That is the most recent information we have on him.”

Barnes was expected to return before Christmas, with Howe suggesting last month that he will return in December. Barnes, however, appears to have to be patient after deciding against surgery for a toe condition.

However, there is some good news regarding another long-term absentee, Sven Botman, who made a cameo appearance in the 3-0 Premier League victory over Fulham on Saturday night. The Dutchman could see more minutes at Stamford Bridge, but there is fierce competition in the heart of the defense for this game, with Emil Krafth and Paul Dummett already proven to be reliable players in the Carabao Cup against Manchester United and Manchester City earlier this season.

Howe stated today of Botman, “There are certain players who lift the team that little bit extra, and he is one of those players.” He’s a huge person with a tremendous presence, and we missed him.”
