“Huge potential” – Carlton Palmer reacts as Sunderland and Birmingham City plot striker move

Both Sunderland and Birmingham City are said to be interested in Sevilla youngster Musa Drammeh

Drammeh is a 22-year-old Gambian attacker who has shined this season for Sevilla’s B team, Sevilla Atletico.

The teenage forward has yet to make his first-team debut but is thought to be on the cusp of being called up after netting five goals and two appearances for the club’s second string this season.

He is in the final six months of his contract with Sevilla, and both the Blues and Black Cats are thought to be interested in signing him on a cheap deal in January.

“Very impressive target” – Carlton Palmer on Musa Drammeh

Palmer, speaking exclusively to Sportzone, described Drammeh as an impressive potential addition but raised concerns about the forward’s lack of senior football experience.

“Birmingham and Sunderland are interested in 22-year-old Musa Drammeh from Sevilla,” Palmer told the BBC.

“He has impressed at the youth team level but has no senior experience.” Drammeh’s contract expires in the summer, making him a tempting target for a bargain in the January transfer window.

“We know Sunderland likes to sign young players for low fees, develop them, and then sell them for a lot of money.”

“Drammeh has pace and is very direct, so would be a good fit at either club and has huge potential.”

Sunderland and Birmingham’s interest in Musa Drammeh

Birmingham City boss Wayne Rooney is trying to improve his striker ranks, with the club scoring just 23 goals in 20 league games and the club’s best scorer scoring only five.

Jay Stansfield presently leads the Blues’ scoring charts, but he is on loan, so bringing Drammeh in on a permanent basis would provide the club with some security if Stansfield was recalled by Fulham.

Sunderland, however, have a plethora of young strikers on their books, but none of them have scored this season. Despite this, the club is currently in the play-off positions. This demonstrates that with a prolific striker on their books, they have a very good chance of making the play-offs.

It’s a credit to the rest of the squad that they’re still in the hunt despite having strikers who haven’t scored all season, though it may not be sustainable for the rest of the season.

The best fit for Musa Drammeh

Given their reputation for nurturing young players, it’s fair to argue Sunderland would be a better fit for Drammeh.

Sunderland have been quite interested in young players in previous transfer windows, hoping to develop them and sell them for a higher price. The Black Cats are also performing better in the league table; they are in the play-off mix, whereas Birmingham are at the bottom.

Despite the fact that they are currently without a manager, it is fair to argue that Sunderland are a considerably more stable club at the moment and would be more tolerant to a young youngster making their first steps in first-team football.
