The Magpies could well be in the market for another forward in January
Alan Shearer, a Newcastle United star, has urged his former team to try to re-sign Brentford forward Ivan Toney during the January transfer window.
The Magpies’ forwards include Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson, both of whom have scored at a high rate this season. However, both players have been injured this season, prompting calls for the Magpies to add a third striker during the January transfer window.
That is something Shearer believes in, and he has urged United to try to re-sign Toney despite his suspension until January 2016.
“If I was in charge of recruitment at Newcastle, I would [try to sign him],” Shearer said on the Rest is Football podcast.
“I think he’s a really good player and a really good option for Newcastle, and they need to improve in that area.” They need another body in there, and I don’t think Ivan Toney will be hard to find.”
Toney has 32 goals in 66 Premier League games for Brentford, and a return to Newcastle would bring him full circle after leaving the Magpies to join Peterborough United in August 2018.
The England international, on the other hand, has been linked with a move to Arsenal, and Shearer has admitted that he believes he would be a perfect match for the Gunners.
When asked about Arsenal’s links with Toney, Shearer said: “I think with who they have on either side down the flanks I think he would have a field day with the amount of crosses into the box.”
