Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe will now look to the Carabao Cup to help get over European elimination
Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has advised his players that they must “override” their disappointment at being eliminated from the Champions League.
The 2-1 defeat to AC Milan also meant that they were denied the consolation prize of the Europa League. The Magpies meet Fulham in the Premier League for the first time since exiting Europe, and Howe also provided an injury report this morning.
“We are now getting a couple of players back but not in their best physical condition,” Howe remarked at his pre-match press conference ahead of the Fulham clash.
Kieran misses this game through suspension so it is a good time for him to rest and we will see how he is next week.
“We will see how Anthony Gordon is today. Joe Willock is in a period where he has had a couple of injections, a difficult injury but he won’t be back this side of January.
“It’s the same with Harvey Barnes; he won’t require surgery, but we’re waiting to see if he returns or not.”
Dan Burn is getting closer to returning, as is Sena Longstaff, and we’re working hard to keep them there.
“We will go to Chelsea with the best team we can,” he said when asked if he would now prioritize the Carabao Cup vs Chelsea over Fulham. No squad can handle the quantity of injuries we’ve experienced. I haven’t taken out my violin, and I’m not making excuses.”
Newcastle has now lost three consecutive games in all competitions, conceding nine goals. According to Howe, the goal now is to overcome any negativity.
Howe said: “It is going to be a big test to our ability to respond. There will be a narrative that will be negative. We have to override that. It is a brilliant group and by the time the next game kicks off we will be ready for it.
“It won’t be negative internally, I know what happens externally. It is down to us and how we handle it. We just have to respond in the way we have so many times since I’ve been here.”
