Newcastle United player breaks 17-year Arsenal Champions League record

Newcastle United managed to break one commendable Champions League record despite their loss to AC Milan.

Newcastle United fans were forced to put a stop to this year’s fairytale European voyage when they were defeated 2-1 at home by seven-time champions AC Milan.

Despite their early withdrawal, the Magpies will remember their first European campaign in 20 years fondly.

Fans were treated to a historic 4-1 victory over French champions PSG, as well as hard-fought draws at both the San Siro and the Parc des Princes.

The impressive performances of some of Newcastle’s greatest young players, such Tino Livramento and Anthony Gordon, have been another huge positive for Eddie Howe to take away from the campaign.

But it was teenager Lewis Miley, who displayed outstanding composure and technique in the heart of the midfield during the recent defeat to AC Milan, who grabbed the majority of the headlines.

Newcastle United 'superstar' made Champions League history during last night's defeat, he was amazing

Since making his competitive debut against Chelsea on the penultimate day of last season, the 17-year-old has risen quickly into the first team picture.

Miley had made nine first team appearances in all competitions this season, and although being called up due to an injury crisis, he has never appeared out of place in the first team picture when competing against a slew of skilled and experienced pros.

Miley’s influence on the first team stage has been outstanding, and he played a significant role in assisting Joelinton’s opening goal, cementing his place in Champions League history.

Miley’s assist for Newcastle’s opener makes him the youngest player in competition history to assist a goal for an English club, aged 17 years and 226 days, breaking Theo Walcott’s mark of 17 years and 250 days set by Arsenal in November 2006.
