Journalist confirms Southampton could sign versatile 23-year-old in January

According to journalist Darren Witcooop, Southampton is still interested in signing West Ham defender Ben Johnson.

The Saints were interested in signing the versatile 23-year-old defender during the summer transfer window, but the deal fell through. However, they may try to sign him again in January.

According to a Sunday Mirror journalist, Johnson could be on the move next month. Southampton are aiming to cut Mason Holgate’s loan contract short since he is expected to return to Everton in January.

Johnson is seen as a substitute for Holgate by the Championship club. He adds versatility to the back line.

Makes sense

Johnson came via the club’s development academy and has made 85 appearances in all competitions. He had been a regular with the team for the previous three seasons, but has recently lost his starting spot.

He has yet to appear in the Premier League this season. He has only made cup appearances thus far, and it is evident that he is not in David Moyes’ first-team plans at the present.

Johnson is a versatile defender who can play both center back and right back. In 2021-22, he appeared in 34 games for the club in all competitions. It makes sense for him to relocate and play consistently elsewhere.

Southampton are striving to return to the Premier League and are currently fourth in the table. Leicester City and Ipswich Town now lead the standings, followed by Leeds United and Southampton.

Johnson will be a good addition for the Saints, and Moyes is unlikely to object if an offer for him arrives in January.
