Insider Dean Jones has revealed how Danny Ings “might become available” and how Southampton may “maybe” bring him back after a “setback.”
The Saints signed Ross Stewart from Sunderland in the summer after he scored 10 Championship goals last season and 24 League One goals the season before.
The Scot was absent for the first 11 games of the season due to an injury. He then played 17 minutes in two games to try to regain full fitness before being shelved once more.
In the midst of Stewart’s difficulties, insider Jones addressed the possibility of former star striker Ings returning to the club to provide some firepower up front.
“It was a big signing for Saints. When you’re dropping into the Championship, you need these sort of deals to pay off. But at the moment, it’s frustrating, and I’m sure there’s plenty of fans that feel like it’s already a let down,” Jones told GIVEMESPORT.
“You think about players like Danny Ings that might become available in January and you think maybe, just maybe, there’s a chance we can go and get someone like that to help us through.
“I’m not sure how reasonable that is because I don’t think Saints are going to be giving up on Stewart.
“But you want to know that he’s going to be out on that pitch, you want to know he’s going to be available. This is clearly a setback that Saints could really do without.”
Given that Ings has been used rarely by West Ham this season, it appears that he could become available. His 130 Premier League minutes have been spread out over nine games, with little meaningful opportunity to gain form.
They may sanction a trade for the player they purchased for £15 million from Aston Villa in January, but given his short time at the club, they are sure to want to recoup a significant portion of that fee.
However, because Ings is only under contract until 2025, they may be compelled to sell him for whatever bid comes in before his worth decreases any further.
If possible, bringing Ings back to Southampton would be a wonderful coup. The striker had the best season of his career with the Saints, scoring more goals (46) than with any other club.
Ings was a valuable asset in the Championship before moving up to the Premier League, and a dip down could suit him. It might also help the Saints maintain their playoff position as they seek to rebound back.
